Kate Lipsky

Kate Lipsky has no formal art background. She began her artistic process in a more conscious way when she began studying painting with Steve Carpenter in the late 1990’s. In winter 2001 she took her first formal photography workshop with Sarah Meaghan Lee at the Santa Fe Workshops, Santa Fe, New Mexico shooting slide film and was hooked!

In 2005 she went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, during Easter week, working with Raul Touzon from Santa Fe Workshops, and returned that fall to continue this mentorship with Raul in San Miguel during “Day of The Dead”, again shooting slide film.

In May of 2006 Kate collaborated with Christine Knoblauch and Idris Salih, with a show and her first body of digital work, entitled, “Grace Revealed”. Each photographer captured images of Kate’s daughter, Alanna dancing, but each were uniquely their own vision. That show prompted her commitment to further explore her creative process through photographic images.

Kate continued to evolve and in 2007 attended a workshop with world class photographer, Ernestine Ruben (ernestineruben.com) at Peters Valley Craft Center, Layton, NJ, where she studied and photographed the human form for several years under Ernie’s mentorship.

In 2009 one of Kate’s images, “Dusk” was accepted at the SOFA (School of Fine Arts), prestigious Kinsey Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

In 2010, Kate began working at Peters Valley with Laurie Klein, (ps.laurieklein.com) and with the discovery of the effects of infrared photography and the alliance with model and muse, Nicole Cudzilo, an entire body of work entitled, “Revelations”, arose which Kate has been developing for almost three years. This series explores the concept of ‘reveal/conceal’, and how we choose to either ‘mask’ ourselves or ‘make known’ ourselves in the world. This body of work, shown on silk panels 30” x 40”, hung free form from stainless wire, portrays only a fraction of the work initiated with Nicole.

Kate continues to study with mentor Laurie Klein, and is continuing mentorship with an invitation by Ernie Ruben to do a workshop in Praslin, France August, 2012 with Jean-Luc Monterosso, Founder, Director and Curator of The Museum “Maison Europeenee de la Photographie” in Paris.

Kate continues to pursue her passion for capturing the mystery of the human form, and is exploring unique ways to conceive, capture, print and present that mystery in her photographic images.
